Most parents hate the fact that their child has to wear diapers. However, even worse, we dread having to toilet train our toddlers. Just the mere thought of it can make us cringe in fear of frustration and accidents. The truth is it doesn’t have to be this way! You simply have to keep these three easy-to-use toilet training tips for parents everywhere.
Wait Until They Are Ready: Not You
Perhaps the most valuable tip you will ever hear is to wait until your child is ready, not you. As parents, it is natural for us to want to push our toddlers to go potty. We hear from other parents that we should have already succeeded with it. If you push, you will have a less than successful toilet training journey. It will also be less fun for you and your child.
How will you know that they are ready? Let them show you. Often toddlers that are ready will have wet diapers less often. They may go to a certain spot when they are using their diaper. They may tell you that they need a clean diaper. You know your child. You will also know when they are ready.
Know That Your Child Isn’t Racing Against Others
How many times has someone told you that their child was potty trained by the age of 1, 2, 3? Whatever age is just before the age of your own child. Admittedly, some kids may be potty trained by the time they are 1.5-years. Others may not be completely trained until they are 4- to 5-years. Every child is different, and none of them care what someone else’s child did. You shouldn’t worry about it either!
Expect Accidents to Happen
Whether you dread them or want to avoid them, know that accidents will happen. Even a child that is fully potty trained can have an accident because they get caught up in playing with friends. They have spent their entire lives, until now, going wherever the urge hits them. Just because you put pullups or underwear on them, doesn’t mean they will never forget again.
Toilet training is not easy, but if you follow our toilet training tips, it can be less stressful for you both. You should also know that you are not alone in it. Teachers, other family members, and your partner can all work together to make potty training easier.
